The borders that European states are erecting against migrants and refugees have long since extended far beyond the EU's external borders, including through many countries on the African continent. The repressive border regime creates life-threatening conditions and encourages mass deportations, pushbacks and serious human rights violations. It causes people to die not only in the Mediterranean and Atlantic, but also on the routes through Niger and other Sahel and Sahara countries.

Alarme Phone Sahara (APS) counters this brutal EU border regime in Agadez and other places in northern Niger with solidarity interventions. The Alarme Phone Sahara teams rescue people in distress on the flight and migration routes in the Niger desert. They provide indispensable support to thousands of people who are deported from the Maghreb countries to Niger and have to survive there under the most precarious conditions. They also document the human rights situation on the migration and flight routes and defend the right to freedom of movement under humane conditions.

Agadez

is the capital of the northern region of Niger and an important hub for travel through the Sahara. This is where the paths of many people on their way to Algeria and Libya cross. Thousands of people deported from Tunisia, Algeria and Libya end up stranded in Agadez in precarious conditions. Many of the women, but also men and children, have experienced traumatic exploitation and violence on their journey. The Alarme Phone Sahara team organises distributions of food and hygiene products, runs a weekly collective kitchen for migrants, accompanies people to doctors and hospitals in medical emergencies, and offers consultation hours for people suffering from psychological trauma.

Assamaka

on the border between Niger and Algeria, is the arrival point for people who are deported from Algeria in huge convoys and systematically abused and robbed by Algerian security forces. The Alarme Phone Sahara team uses its tricycle vehicles to pick up people who are abandoned in the desert 15 km outside the village during deportation. In this way, it prevents people who are sick, weakened or injured from collapsing on the march or straying from the path and dying in the desert.

Dirkou, Bilma, Latai and Siguidine are located in the Kaouar desert region on the Trans-Saharan route to Libya. In this vast desert region, people regularly find themselves in life-threatening situations due to car breakdowns and accidents. Recently, more and more people have been arriving there who have been deported from Libya by Libyan militias. The Alarme Phone Sahara team participates in rescue operations in desert emergencies and organises food distributions for deported people.

Donations needed

The solidarity work of Alarme Phone Sahara on the Sahel-Sahara migration routes costs money. A large part of the fixed costs is covered by funding from ‘Medico International’ and ‘Bread for the World’ – but the urgent daily need for practical support for people on the move is greater.

Every small or large donation makes a solidarity contribution to human rights and freedom of movement on the Sahel-Sahara routes – donate now!
