Libyan militias, the henchmen of the European border regime
Since 2024, Alarme Phone Sahara has repeatedly observed the deportation of large groups of people, mainly Nigerien citizens, from Libya.
These deportations are carried out, at least in part, by the militias of General Khalifa Haftar, who claims control over much of eastern and southern Libya.
Haftar's militias and those supporting the so-called Government of National Unity in Tripoli are both implicated in arbitrary detentions, exploitation, human trafficking, torture, rape and murder of migrants. And both factions seek to profit from funds from anti-migration deals concluded by EU member states.
Following mass deportations from Tunisia, Algeria and Libya, several thousand migrants find themselves stranded in precarious conditions in various places of Niger.
