· In 2022, over a hundred people were criminalised in EU countries for supporting refugees and migrants.
· In Greece, you might be better off being convicted of bank robbery than for steering a boat through the Aegean Sea.
· In Niger a network of NGOs is suing against a restrictive anti-smuggling law.
Migrant Defenders, people who stand up for the rights of refugees and migrants, are increasingly under attack worldwide. Refugees and migrants increasingly face violence, deprivation of rights and death. Whether in Greece, Pakistan, Mexico or Niger - anyone who raises alarm lives dangerously. Migrant Defenders are the focus of this year's Brot für die Welt Atlas on Civil Society.
For six years now, the Atlas on Civil Society has been documenting the state of civic space worldwide. More than 85 per cent of the world's population live in countries where they experience severe restrictions on fundamental freedoms, such as freely expressing their opinions, demonstrate, assemble or organise. This is the result of the CIVICUS Monitor 2022, on whose analyses the Atlas on Civil Society 2023 is based, among others.
We will talk with international partners and political representatives.
