Report of the Alarme Phone Sahara mission to Dirkou, Bilma, Latai and Siguidine

With the aim of research and of improving the work of Alarme Phone Sahara on the ground, a mission took place to visit Dirkou, Bilma, Latai and Siguidine in the zone of the Kawar desert in the North of Niger, a zone crossed by many migrants and travelers. The region is also known for its dangerous risks on the migration routes and many migrants have lost their lives and been burried in the Kawar desert.

The year 2022 has started with large-scale deportation convoys from Algeria and Libya to Niger, accompanied by systematic violations of the rights and dignity of the people concerned.

December 2021: At least one Sudanese man died among 3269 people deported from Algeria to Niger in December 2021

The year 2021 ends with the tragic death of a Sudanese citizen deported from Algeria who died at "point zero" in the desert area of the Algerian-Nigerian border near the town of Assamaka. During the whole of 2021, at least 25396 people were deported from Algeria to Niger.

New deportations from Algeria to Niger: 1288 people deported on 16th and 18th of July 2021

Massive and regular deportations from Algeria to Niger continue during the month of July 2021. With at least 1288 people deported on 16th and 18th of July 2021, the number of people deported since the beginning of 2021 increases to at least 14869 people.

Mass deportations from Algeria to Niger continue in April, May, June and July 2021

After the big wave of deportations in March, another at least 7332 people were deported in 12 deportation convoys from April till July 2021. Alarme Phone Sahara demands an immediate stop of this deportation policy and respect for the lives and human rights of migrants and refugees.

21st of May 2021: Transnational Day of Action "Freedom of Movement instead of deportations!"

On 21st of May 2021, the transnational network "Afrique Europe Interact" and Alarme Phone Sahara, together with different partner groups, celebrated the transnational day of action "FREEDOM OF MOVEMENT INSTEAD OF DEPORTATIONS!" to demonstrate against deportations from Europe to African countries, but also deportations between African countries, encouraged by readmission agreements and by the externalisation of the EU border regime
